Domestic Customer
The team at County Drains have a lot of experience of sorting out drain problems inside and on your property.
Plumbing and drain systems vary dependent on the age of the property and how well it's been maintained. We've put together some of our top tips to help homeowners care for their drains and reduce the risk of problems occurring.
The tips are designed to help you with drain cleaning and to stop drains from getting blocked. All our tips are cheap and easy to do!
Using hot water will keep any grease or leftover food running down the drain, and preventing it from sticking to the inside of the pipes and clogging them up. The hotter the water is the better!
Vinegar is one of the best cleaners around, pouring a cup of vinegar down the drain and waiting 30 minutes until you rinse with hot water, will help ensure that food leftovers will break up and dissolve.
It's easy for food to escape when you're draining food over the sink, using a capture plug will help to reduce the amount of food going down the drain. Rather than rinse it down the drain empty it into the bin. Food will accumulate in the drain over time, so much better to bin than drain it!
Make sure that you clean suds and hair from plug holes, this will stop it building up and reduce costly blockages in the pipe work. Look out for slow draining sinks!
The most popular trick for getting rid of sink drain smells is a bubbling mixture of baking soda and vinegar washed down with very hot water. It won't smell of perfume but the drains won't be quite so smelly.
Don't ignore your outside drains, check them on a regular basis. Make sure that drain covers or grates are not letting leaves and debris through or being left on top of the covers. Check to make sure water is not backing up more than you would normally expect, if it is you may want to check them cleared.
It might be tempting to use a strong corrosive chemical to get rid of any drain build ups. They shouldn't be used - you may injure yourself, cause pollution or corrode the pipe systems. If the simple home remedies don't work call a drain professional - we have a range of equipment and experience that will do the job!
If you find that these tips are a bit too late or aren't working then please contact the team at County Drains on 01530 510571 to arrange a drain inspection.
