Do you understand what your homeowner drain responsibilities are?

In October 2011 the law regarding the responsibility of drainage changed, however many people still are unaware of these changes and are spending money on drains that they are not actually responsible for.  We are explaining to clients the changes in the law on a weekly basis to ensure that they do not invest in drainage that is not theirs. 

Prior to October 2011  the local water authority was only responsible for the main sewers and section 24 sewers (shared drain from more than one property that was built pre-1937), however when the law changed in 2011 any shared drain became the responsibility of the local water authority, as did any drain off of a properties boundary.

But what about the roads?

The highways authority, usually the county council are responsible for highway drains and road gullies that are causing surface water flooding. If stormwater is flooding due to blocked gullies then contact them. However if the main storm sewer is blocked and the properties rainwater connects into this then it would more than likely be the local water authorities responsibility.
