As part of our ISO 14001 compliance series, this article shows how we can help you when it comes to handling hazardous waste at your site.
Delivery and handling of material such as oils, chemicals and foodstuffs is always a high-risk activity. Particular care should be taken during delivery, loading, unloading and transfer of hazardous substances, as there is a risk of accidents, spillage and environmental pollution.
All loading and unloading areas on your site should be marked and isolated from the surface water drainage system. We can advise on separators or sumps for this purpose. We can also fit automatic spill containment cut-off valves, sensors and alarms to prevent spillages through overfilling or from spillage from the loading/unloading process.
Oil interceptors (or oil separators) are fitted to surface water drainage systems to protect the environment from pollution by oils, including petrol and diesel. They separate oil from the water and then retain the oil safely until it is removed. They are installed to contain oil leaks from vehicles and plant and accidental spillages.
To be effective, oil interceptors should be correctly designed, installed and maintained. Ideally, these should have an oil sensor present to alert of a high oil level or spillage where pollution is imminent. We offer many oil sensor options including web-based and text-based alarm systems and maintenance service.
We operate a fleet of vacuum tankers for emptying and cleaning septic tanks, grease traps, oil interceptors and pumping stations. We’re licensed waste carriers, and all waste is disposed of at authorised treatment facilities with Duty of Care and Consignment Notes completed and passed on to all relevant parties.
County Drains are specialists in pollution and environmental control, and we are ISO 14001 certified. We offer expert advice and services to companies looking to set up or implement their environmental management policies.
